Perth Mint is operated by Gold Corporation, a statutory authority of the Government of Western Australia, the Mint’s owner. In 1986, Perth Mint became the home of the Australian Precious Metals Coin Program and produces Australia’s official gold and silver bullion coins on behalf of the Australian Commonwealth Government.
The Saltwater Crocodile (Crocodylus porosus) is the largest living reptile species. While usually not exceeding 2200 pounds, they can reach over 4000 pounds in weight and 22 feet in length. Given their massive size and strong bite, the saltwater crocodile has no natural predators.
The obverse of each coin depicts a Queen Elizabeth II profile and 1 Dollar denomination. The reverse of each coin bears the inscriptions “Australian Saltwater Crocodile,” the year date, weight and purity surrounding a crocodile with jaws agape, designed by Natasha Muhl. Below the crocodile is Perth mint’s “P” mintmark. Each coin is one troy ounce of .999 fine silver
