3. Born To Sing: No Plan B

Price: $9.99

The subtitle of Van Morrison s new album, Born To Sing: No Plan B, indicates the power that music still holds for this living legend. No Plan B means this is not a rehearsal, says Morrison. That s the main thing it s not a hobby, it s real, happening now, in real time. This sense of absolute conviction, which has defined Morrison s revolutionary work for almost fifty years, runs throughout the new record, his thirtyfifth studio album as a solo artist. The ten original songs on Born To Sing, his first new album in four years (the longest he has ever gone between recordings), reveal an artist continuing to test his creative parameters. As Morrison notes, perhaps the most striking thing on the new album is hearing him weigh in on the global financial and economic meltdown on several songs. His sense of outrage at the materialism and greed that have poisoned society first appears in the opening track, the breezy soul strut Open the Door (To Your Heart), when he sings Money doesn t make you fulfilled/Money s just to pay the bills. Born To Sing, recorded live in the studio with a core six-piece band (plus Morrison on piano, guitar, and alto saxophone), extends these musical roots into a signature blend that s impossible to imitate or to categorize. Despite the album s title, Morrison says that he didn t immediately know that he was born to sing. I didn t know it was going to be a job until I was maybe fifteen or sixteen and started working in bands, he says. I was just a kid trying to make my way in life. There was no revelation it doesn t work that way.
Ever since then, though, Van Morrison has offered non-stop revelation to fans around the world. With Born To Sing, he responds to a time of crisis with solace and insight, vision and wonder, and incomparable soul that shows what happens when you really do create from the heart, with no Plan B… Read more >

4. Songs From The Silver Screen

Price: $10.00

On Songs From The Silver Screen, Jackie Evancho applies her brilliant voice and extraordinary artistry to an entirely new set of classics. On her first two full-length albums, Jackie explored musical classics from arias to holiday standards. For Silver Screen, she offers her interpretations of a whole new category of classic music the much-loved movie melodies that have become part of our cultural landscape.
“When I saw the movie version of The Phantom of the Opera when I was 7 years old, it made me want to become a singer ‘The Music of the Night’ is one of the most beautiful songs ever written and I’ve always wanted to perform it”[in public] says Jackie. “My enjoyment of the Phantom score is one of the things that gave us the idea to focus an entire album on songs that stayed in our minds for a long time after the movies were over.”
For this album, Jackie collaborated with Grammy-winning producer/engineer Humberto Gatica, whose lengthy and impressive experience in the music industry has seen him work closely with Grammy award winning producer, David Foster, as well as with superstars like Michael Buble, Madonna, Michael Jackson, Mariah Carey and Barbra Streisand.
Jackie has some impressive company on some of the tracks. Famed violinist Joshua Bell accompanies her on one track (“My Heart Will Go On”from Titanic) as does trumpet player Chris Botti (“The Summer Knows” from The Summer of 42) and 2Cellos (“Se” from Cinema Paradiso). There are also very special duets, one with The Canadian Tenors (“Come What May” from Moulin Rouge) and one with her older brother, Jacob Evancho (“I See the Light” from Tangled).
No one can sing classical crossover music with the technical precision, emotion and intelligence that Jackie brings to it, says Gatica. With the songs we’ve selected for this album, we can show her fans how her talent has only deepened and matured since Dream With Me, which I think was one of the most outstanding albums of 2011… Read more >

5. The 2nd Law

Price: $9.99

Muse didn’t set out to make the most gloriously ambitious album of their career. How could they have? The band who dreamt up “Supermassive Black Hole,” Knights Of Cydonia and the three-part “Exogenesis” symphony were already well-versed in going One Louder. Any wilder, any further out there, and Muse would risk incineration by a dwarf star of their own making. But you don’t become one of the biggest bands on this planet by sitting on your hands.
So when Muse approached the making of their sixth studio album, they wouldn’t stint on the choirs, strings and horn sections. And be reassured: guitar-shredding, piano-thumping, orchestra-arranging, book-chewing, big-thinking Matt Bellamy, as the band’s chief songwriter, didn’t lower his sights from The Big Picture nor ignore The Precious Details. And nor were the trio afraid of giving space to a brilliant new element to their sound – songs written and sung by bass player Chris Wolstenholme.
But what the Devon-born band of schoolfriends did do different was this: they made things easy for themselves. For the first time since the dawn of their career in smalltown England 18 years ago, all three members were living in the same place during the making of an album.
And this time, Muse had the experience born of self-producing The Resistance to apply their studio knowledge to creating the album they really wanted to make.
It was about saving aggro, and conserving energy. And, appropriately, it was about The 2nd Law: an album titled after and thematically influenced by the Second Law of Thermodynamics, which concerns the inevitable wasting of energy within a closed system.
It was about letting themselves go and enjoying themselves. Muse, after all, had earned it… Read more >

5. Americana

Price: $9.99

Americana is the first album from Neil Young & Crazy Horse in nearly nine years. Crazy Horse is: Billy Talbot, Ralph Molina, Poncho Sampedro, and Neil Young. As you ll see from the track-listing, Americana is collection of classic, American folk songs. In their day, some of these may have been referred to as “protest songs,” “murder ballads,” or campfire-type songs passed down with universal, relatable tales for everyman. Some of these compositions which, like “Tom Dooley” and “Oh Susannah,” were written in the 1800s, while others, like “This Land Is Your Land” (utilizing the original, widely misinterpreted “deleted verses”) and “Get A Job,” are mid-20th-century folk classics. It s also interesting to note that “God Save The Queen,” Britain s national anthem, also became the de facto national anthem of sorts before the establishment of The Union as we know it until we came to adopt our very own “The Star Spangled Banner,” which has been recognized for use as early as 1889 and made our official national anthem in 1931. Each of these compositions is very much part of the fabric of our American heritage; the roots of what we think of as “Americana” in cultural terms, using songs as a way of passing along information and documenting our past. What ties these songs together is the fact that while they may represent an America that may no longer exist, the emotions and scenarios behind these songs still resonate with what s going on in the country today with equal, if not greater impact nearly 200 years later. The lyrics reflect the same concerns and are still remarkably meaningful to a society going through economic and cultural upheaval, especially during an election year. They are just as poignant and powerful today as the day they were written… Read more >

They are just as poignant and powerful today as the day they were written.

5. Love Is a Four Letter Word

Enthralled by the young songwriter s free-flowing lyrical mastery, Rivera invited Mraz to join the eponymous trio he fronted alongside his brother Carlos. The group hit the road, travelling California s highways and byways together in a beat-up Winnebago, inspiring Mraz s classic song, “Dream Life of Rand McNally.” When Carlos decided to take time off, Jason and Toca continued to collaborate as a duo, earning acclaim and passionate audience responses wherever they performed. Mraz s guitar and vocals match beautifully with Rivera s intuitive djembe playing and the two maintain a long friendship and collaborative relationship, recording and touring together to this day… Read more >

Critics have praised the outstanding live performances of Tedeschi Trucks Band. Led by one of the most dynamic husband-wife teams in popular music, singer-guitarist Susan Tedeschi and slide guitar virtuoso Derek Trucks, the 11-piece ensemble is the ultimate big band for lovers of rock and delta blues that also pays homage to the far-ranging influences of funk, gospel, jazz and world music.
Everybody s Talkin contains eleven tracks cherry-picked by the group to serve as a musical look-back on their first band-building year. Featured are versions of tunes from Revelator that are already crowd favorites “Bound For Glory”, \”Love Has Something Else To Say” some with added details, that takes them a notch higher than the studio originals. Other songs reveal the group’s affection for a wide range of soulful forebears, including Stevie Wonder (“Uptight” ), Muddy Waters (“Rollin’ And Tumblin'”), Bill Withers (“Kissin’ My Love”), Joe Cocker (“Darlin’ Be Home Soon”), Bobby Bland (“That Did It”), Harry Nilsson (“Everybody’s Talkin'”) and the Staple Singers (“Wade In The Water”).

9. Amaryllis Shinedown

Price: $9.99

Re-teaming with The Sound of Madness producer Rob Cavallo (Green Day, My Chemical Romance, Kid Rock) Shinedown presents its fourth full-length album – the bruising, unapologetic, and totally kinetic Amaryllis.

Amaryllis, with unflinchingly honest, unrepentant songs like first single “Bully” and “I’m Not All Right, ” as well as the deeply moving “Miracle” and the soulful love song “I’ll Follow You, ” delivers on its mission statement throughout its 12 tracks. From a thematic standpoint, Amaryllis is a record about vulnerability. It reveals the bruises and scars, but also their healing. “It’s not a record for the faint of heart, ” Smith admits. “Every single song makes a statement. I was looking for the kind of emotion that made every hair on the back of my neck stand on end. Because of that, I feel in my heart and soul that this album is a game changer for our band.”

Six songs on Amaryllis feature a 30-piece orchestra, including “I’m Not All Right” – Shinedown’s first-ever song to incorporate horns, which drive home the manic intensity of its subject matter. Another highlight is “Bully, ” which finds Smith addressing the tormentor in question in the strongest possible terms. “Amaryllis is probably the most rock and roll album we’ve ever made, ” Smith says. “We’ve always been a rock band, and I didn’t want to lose sight of that. I told everyone the album had to do three things: It had to show sophistication in the songwriting, it had to show musical growth within the band, and I had to push myself to go places lyrically that I had never gone before. “… Read more >

3. Whitney Houston – The Greatest Hits

Price: $12.99

For an artist who only released four proper albums in a 15-year career, it’s astounding to recall how many hits Whitney Houston was able to achieve. The two CDs on The Greatest Hits track Houston’s rise from mid-’80s Top 40 balladeer to standard-setting diva. Disc 1, Cool Down, runs chronologically through Houston’s down-tempo love songs, from “The Greatest Love of All” and “I Will Always Love You” to the cleverly conceived new duet with Deborah Cox, “Same Script, Different Cast.” She’s also showcased as the remixee of choice for DJs on the second disc, Throw Down, which serves as the antidote to the lovesick first disc. Calling in marquee mixmasters, Houston’s old-shoe tunes get a new millennium polish. “My Love Is Your Love,” reinterpreted by Jonathan Peters, captures the versatility of Houston’s songs by making the downbeats danceable without going totally Euro-cheese. In contrast, Junior Vasquez’s remix of 1985’s “How Will I Know” pokes fun at the song’s ’80s fluffiness by layering in bells, lasers effects, and echoes on top of Whitney’s enthusiastic vocals… Read more >

Fans were given a hint of what to expect when Cohen made remarks as the recipient of the Principe de Asturias Prize for literature in Spain in October 2011.

“As I grew older, I understood that instructions came with this voice. And the instructions were these…Never to lament casually. And if one is to express the great inevitable defeat that awaits us all, it must be done within the strict confines of dignity & beauty… Read more >

6. The Monkees – Greatest Hits

Price: $10.45

Unless you’re a snob, a good Monkees collection belongs on your shelves, not too far from discs by the Turtles, the Lovin’ Spoonful, and other avatars of clean, occasionally rocking ’60s Top 40 pop. Greatest Hits is a more than generous stack, bringing together not only the obvious megahits (“I’m a Believer,” “Pleasant Valley Sunday,” the incredibly propulsive “Valleri”) but also a number of tunes that had the bad luck to fall on the wrong side of the act’s swift rise and fall. Foremost among these is “Porpoise Song,” a lyrically incomprehensible Goffin/King stab at psychedelia that’s at once a crass cash-in and one of the loveliest, most fragile sounds to emerge from the American hippie dream.

Budget-priced, 20 track retrospective featuring ‘(ThemeFrom) The Monkees’ and all 11 of their top 40 hits from the’60s: ‘D.W. Washburn’, ‘Tapioca Tundra’, ‘Valleri’,’Daydream Believer’, ‘Words’, ‘Pleasant Valley Sunday’,’Last Train To Clarksville’, ‘I’m A… Read more >

Price: $15.99

Deluxe two CD edition includes five additional tracks. 2012 release, the 12th studio album from the Pop diva and international superstar. In the 80s Madonna achieved notoriety for her flagrant sexuality, which saw some tag her as a soft-porn star who happened to sing. Madonna Louise Ciccone Ritchie, better known as Madonna, has been many… Read more >

9. Kisses on the Bottom Paul McCartney

Price: $9.99

While many a musician is often asked about the tunes that have influenced their songwriting, it is not a question Paul McCartney ordinarily gets to answer – until now. Paul is about to offer a glimpse into “the songs which inspired the songs” with the upcoming release of a brand new album of those standards he grew up listening to in his childhood-plus two brand new McCartney compositions. With the help of Grammyr Award-winning producer Tommy LiPuma and Diana Krall and her band-as well as guest appearances from Eric Clapton and Stevie Wonder, McCartney’s new album is a deeply personal journey through classic American compositions that, in some cases, a young Paul first heard his father perform on piano at home. As authentic and daring a musical statement as he could make, this is the album Paul has been thinking about making for more than 20 years – and probably the last thing his fans are expecting. “In the end it was ‘Look, if I don’t do it now, I’ll never do it’,” he says. In short, Paul believes it is about time “the songs me and John based quite a few of our things on” received the recognition they deserve. Moreover, the record also features a couple of new original McCartney compositions in the spirit of those classics. “When I kind of got into songwriting, I realized how well structured these songs were and I think I took a lot of my lessons from them,” Paul explains… Read more >

3. El Camino The Black Keys

With the hard-rocking El Camino, The Black Keys fourth Nonesuch disc, guitarist-singer Dan Auerbach and drummer Patrick Carney conjure up an exhilarating, stadium-sized sound in collaboration with producer and friend Danger Mouse. El Camino boasts a no-nonsense brilliance: The pace is fast, the mood is upbeat, the choruses unfailingly addictive made for shouting along, preferably in a large, sweaty crowd.
A band already at the top of its game has gotten even better. And The Black Keys have done pretty damn well so far this year, with three 2011 Grammy awards for Brothers under their belt, an MTV Video Music Award for Tighten Up, more than 850,000 copies of Brothers sold in the U.S., and upwards of a million units worldwide, plus innumerable licensing placements in film, TV, and commercials. El Camino features one stand-out track after another, such as first single Lonely Boy, Gold on the Ceiling, and the surprising, acoustic-guitar-driven, tempo-shifting Little Black Submarines.

4. For the Good Times The Little Willies

2012 release from this Country side-project led by Norah Jones. Material for the album was taken from the Willies’ live repertoire, and by passing around ideas drawn from disparate sources. The selections include more surprising choices, like the trucker classic ‘Diesel Smoke, Dangerous Curves’ and ‘Foul Owl On The Prowl,’ from the soundtrack to In The Heat Of The Night. Alongside the more obscure songs, though, For the Good Times also includes some of the best-known songs in the history of Country music, like Dolly Parton’s ‘Jolene’ and the title track, written by Kris Kristofferson and made famous by such singers as Ray Price and Al Green.

8. Voyageur Kathleen Edwards

Kathleen Edwards’ ‘Voyageur’ is the acclaimed Canadian singer-songwriter’s fourth album, and her first since ‘Asking for Flowers’ (2008). Produced by Justin Vernon (aka Bon Iver) and Edwards, ‘Voyageur’ is less of a departure than it is a journey, and like any transforming trip, it demands that we let go of any preconceptions about the destination. ‘Voyageur’ evokes a spectrum of overwhelming feelings within the atmosphere of a lucid dream. Edwards’ characters speak to the grief, loneliness, shock, and confusion that come with endings as well as the hope and irrepressible joy that accompany new beginnings, but the stories are told with a seductively quiet strength. Aided by the musical support of fellow travelers Justin Vernon and Norah Jones, ‘Voyageur’ features standout tracks such as “Change the Sheets,” “Mint,” and “A Soft Place to Land.”

9. Give Us Rest David Crowder Band

David Crowder*Band delivers their final album, Give Us Rest or (a requiem mass in c [the happiest of all keys]), an epic, triumphant 2 CD album that poetically illustrates that in death something new is reborn. The album showcases the band’s unique music style and touches on worship, pop, rock, bluegrass and electronic genres. It features 34 tracks, including the first single “Let Me Feel You Shine”.

David Crowder*Band’s latest music video for “SMS (Shine)” nabbed coverage on NBC’s The Today Show, Fox & Friends, USA Today, Billboard and Paste Magazine online as well as a GMA Dove Award win for “Short Form Video of the Year.” The video was also recognized at the LA Film Festival in 2011. Along with the group’s 9 GMA Dove Awards and 22 nominations, the band was the first Christian artist to be named MSN.com’s Artist of the Year in 2006. The band is also part of the Passion Movement, participating in university student gatherings in the US and around the world.

10. Lioness Hidden Treasures Amy Winehouse

The album, Lioness: Hidden Treasures, the third album from Amy Winehouse, without question one of the most talented, original, and best loved artists to emerge in popular music for decades, will be released in the United States on December 6th through Universal Republic Records. The 12 track collection features previously unreleased tracks, alternate versions of existing classics as well as a couple of brand new Amy compositions, and has been compiled by long-time musical partners Salaam Remi and Mark Ronson in close association with Amy’s family, management and UK record label Island Records.
